Osamu Custom No. 2: Eating Vegetable Rice
Eat vegetables and rice
It is a custom in old Nanjing to eat vegetables and rice in Xiaohan. Nanjing people attach great importance to Xiaohan. People will cook rice with glutinous rice, ginger, short leg yellow, bacon slices, sausage slices or salted duck dices. Traditional Chinese medicine believes that cold is a yin evil, and Xiaohan is the coldest solar term of the year and the period when yin energy is at its strongest. The glutinous rice in Nanjing vegetable rice nourishes the body and replenishes qi, strengthens the spleen and warms the stomach, and can enhance the body's ability to resist cold evil; ginger is pungent and warm in nature, has the effects of sweating, relieving the surface, warming the lungs and dispersing cold. Coupled with Nanjing's specialties of short-leg yellow, sausage, and salted duck, it is both medicinal and food-topping, delicious, and especially warm after eating in winter, comparable to Laba porridge.
