Chapter 1: A young man’s determination: not to be a good minister but to be a good doctor!
Youngster Zhong Yitang
Chang Minyi: Mr. Zhong was born in 1915 in Ningbo City, Zhejiang Province, in a family of ancient doctors. With a family background, he inherited the training from the family at a young age. At the age of fifteen, he was admitted to the Shanghai College of Traditional Chinese Medicine (renamed "Shanghai College of Traditional Chinese Medicine" the following year), where he was taught by famous doctors such as Cheng Menxue, Qin Boyei, and Fei Tongfu. He studied hard and persevered, and achieved outstanding academic results. Shortly after graduating in 1933, he moved to Xuanhuyongcheng, where he experienced serious illness and gained a reputation. He is best at treating various difficult and complicated diseases such as liver cirrhosis, chronic bronchitis, colitis, typhoid fever, etc., and can often save patients from dying. His eldest brother Zhong Yiguan and his second brother Zhong Yigui were both good doctors. The three brothers are doctors at the same time, which is really "unparalleled" and extraordinary.
Zhong Zhizhou: I have been familiar with your deeds since I was a child. Both of your parents died when you were young. It was your brother who cared for you like a father when you grew up. Later, when your brother got old and fell ill, you did everything you could, personally providing medicine and food, and serving beside the sickbed until his death. When you were still in school, you were well aware that "everyone is responsible for the rise and fall of a country." You actively organized and participated in student anti-Japanese demonstrations. After graduation, you made outstanding contributions to underground organization activities under the cover of being a doctor. Your patriotic feelings have not changed even when you are old. You always teach us not to forget the national humiliation. Your favorite thing to watch on weekdays is the military program, and you often say: "A strong country must first strengthen its army!"
Chapter 2: A family of traditional Chinese medicine with superb medical skills. In the early years, they have been regarded as "miracle doctors" by the world.”
Youth Zhong Yitang
Hong Bo: Mr. Zhong Xuanhu helped the world, and he has been practicing for more than 80 years, which has become a legend! His superb medical skills, noble medical ethics, and open-minded personality are legendary! I have heard my mother say since I was a child that I had a high fever when I was a child. When I was hospitalized, the doctor suspected sepsis and issued a critical illness notice. He asked Dr. Zhong for consultation and gradually recovered. He was treated many times after that... My parents are extremely grateful! Dr. Zhong, whom my parents said was already a miracle doctor with both ability and political integrity!
Zhong Zhizhou: The most touching thing about you is your love for the cause of traditional Chinese medicine. After graduating from Shanghai College of Traditional Chinese Medicine, you have been practicing medicine for more than 80 years. That calm and calm aura, affable attitude, meticulous and precise dialectics, and ever-changing prescriptions from ancient times have relieved the suffering of thousands of patients.
Chapter 3: Sixty-year-old orders, selfless dedication, endless learning
Chang Minyi: In the summer of 1977, the Provincial Health Department and the Municipal Health Bureau decided to establish a traditional Chinese medicine hospital in Ningbo and entrusted Mr. Zhong to prepare the establishment. At that time, Mr. Zhong was already over 60 years old. In order to revitalize the traditional Chinese medicine industry in Ningbo, he gladly obeyed and actively planned. On September 26 of the same year, the original traditional Chinese medicine clinic was officially converted into a traditional Chinese medicine hospital and its establishment was announced. After taking office, regardless of the difficulties of starting a business, braving the severe cold and heat, and the dust, he endured hardships for more than ten years, making the hospital's appearance change with each passing day and its scale continued to expand.
Mr. Zhong and I met in late 1978. At that time, I had just been transferred from Harbin to the newly established Ningbo Institute of Medical Sciences to engage in research on phytochemistry and traditional Chinese medicine pharmacology. Mr. Zhong is very concerned about and attaches great importance to the scientific research of traditional Chinese medicine. He made a special trip to the Medical Institute to "ask me" about some issues about the ingredients of traditional Chinese medicine.
His very humble, very serious attitude and open-minded, modest and gentlemanly demeanor really moved me.
Zhou Jianyang, Xu Limin, Zhong Shuner: In the 1980s and 1990s, the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the Provincial Department of Health launched research on the inheritance of academic experience of national and provincial TCM experts. Mr. Zhong was named the teacher who inherited the academic experience of traditional Chinese medicine. We were fortunate to become the inheritors of Mr. Zhong’s academic experience. Mr. Zhong worked tirelessly, practiced medicine and mentored his disciples, taught people tirelessly, and never gave up because of the stupidity of future generations. Whenever we asked, he never arrogant or considered himself an elder. Instead, he was approachable, sincere in treating each other, taught selflessly, and his ardent expectations were always beyond words. I remember that when Mr. Zhong was teaching us, he taught us all the commonly used methods of combining medicines and flavors, secrets on adding and subtracting dosages, and his own experiences and lessons, including chronic bronchitis, asthma, chronic hepatitis, gastritis, long-term diarrhea and other diseases without reservation. He also repeatedly asked us to read more. Our current achievements are inseparable from the teacher's selfless teaching. This is also our greatest honor. What is rare and valuable is that in his later years, Mr. Zhong also introduced his patients to our disciples. For example, patients with diabetes were introduced to Zhou Jianyang; patients with digestive system were introduced to Xu Limin; patients with liver cirrhosis, tumors, etc. were introduced to Zhong Shuner. This is something that no one without a big heart can do.
Zhong Zhizhou: You are a generous person. When you encounter poor patients in the outpatient clinic, it is common for you to send doctors and medicines. When comrades and students are in trouble, you always lend a hand to help, not to mention raising funds for disaster relief.
Zhou Nanhua: Grandpa always taught us that medical ethics are the most important thing in practicing medicine. Many patients come from long distances to get sick. We need to be patient and careful with patients, and listen to their pain and troubles. When patients come to you for treatment, they place their trust in the doctor, and you must be wholehearted to repay the patient's trust. In my memory, although my grandpa was very busy, he cared about us students very much. Every time it was time for the meal, he would let us students who were doing the prescription go to eat first. However, he would not go to eat until he had seen the last patient at 1.2 o'clock in the afternoon. After finishing the meal in a hurry, he rushed back to work immediately. Even though he was over seventy years old, he still thought about the patients persistently and never neglected any patient. I remember that when I first opened an insomnia clinic, my grandfather told me: “You not only have to treat a person’s physical illness, but more importantly, you have to care for insomnia patients and treat their psychological depression. ” Grandpa’s gentle and gentle attitude towards patients is worthy of learning and respecting by every doctor. Rather than representing the height of what Ningbo Traditional Chinese Medicine can represent, it is better to say that he proves the medical ethics of an era.
Chapter 4: Keep pace with the times and inherit the culture of traditional Chinese medicine!
Chinese medicine master Zhong Yitang
Zhong Zhizhou: When it was discovered that the quality of traditional Chinese medicines was generally declining, he resolutely re-established Zhong Yi Shoutang regardless of his nearly 100-year-old age. Regardless of the cost, he selected high-quality products from many experienced medicinal companies.
In 2012, the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine approved the establishment of the Zhong Yitang Famous Traditional Chinese Medicine Inheritance Studio, which recruited 10 disciples to record, organize, summarize and inherit your academic thoughts and clinical experiences. I am fortunate to be the person in charge of the workshop, and have more time to spend time with you in outpatient clinics, discussing difficult cases, and writing medical records... I have seen your selfless work spirit, which makes me feel ashamed.
Zhou Nanhua: My grandfather is a person who truly lives and learns. Even at the age of 100, he continues to study, studying both traditional Chinese medicine and Western medicine. He often says that we should use the strengths of Western medicine to make up for the weaknesses of Chinese medicine. Even using Huitong's thinking to study, when Western medicine reaches a bottleneck, it is possible to make the treatment brighter through the channels and meridians of traditional Chinese medicine, which is amazing. In 2013, the "Zhong Yitang Inheritance Studio" was established, and I was fortunate to become one of the inheritors of my mentor. I have been studying my grandpa’s academic views, academic thoughts, and characteristics of clinical thinking. I have benefited a lot from studying my grandpa’s empirical prescriptions that have enriched the Chinese culture of traditional Chinese medicine. I have also been able to refine and sublimate my clinical experience.
Hong Bo: I remember someone said that a great man must be simple! I feel the purity and broadness of his soul! He never stopped innovating in medicine and conducting extensive and profound research on traditional Chinese medicine throughout his life. His thin body is like a towering tree, which makes people admire him! His legendary life is recorded in the book "Zhong Yitang, a Master of Traditional Chinese Medicine". These hundred years of life are so rich and abundant, worthy of our memory!
Zhou Jianyang, Xu Limin, Zhong Shuner: At the beginning of 2013, the inheritance studio of Zhong Yitang, a nationally renowned traditional Chinese medicine expert, was grandly launched. The ninety-eight-year-old Zhong now has ten more disciples. After the establishment of the studio, according to the requirements, the functional area construction of the studio was improved, clinical practice with teachers was implemented, academic seminars were held regularly, and Zhong Lao’s academic experience was further summarized and papers were written and published. After more than two years of work, Zhong Lao’s academic experience has been sorted out, summarized, inherited, carried forward and innovated, a group of high-level TCM talents have been cultivated, and the development of TCM in Ningbo has been promoted.
Although Mr. Zhong’s medical spirit is no longer alive, his contribution will be remembered for generations to come. We students must keep in mind the teacher's sincere teachings, continue to study medical theories assiduously, discover the great treasure house of motherland's medicine, and regard inheriting and carrying forward the teacher's academic experience as our eternal task in the future, so as to contribute our strength to the health of the general public, in order to thank the teacher for his training and love for us.
Chang Minyi: That day I went to see him. Unexpectedly, the stairs outside his home were lined with patients waiting in line for his diagnosis and treatment. It is impossible for a good and respected doctor like Mr. Zhong to retire in the true sense.
The charm of Mr. Zhong shows a comprehensive and well-trained scientific beauty.
A philosopher once said: "The beauty of science is a profound beauty. This beauty consists in the harmonious order of its parts, and pure reason can grasp her. ”Although they are old, their spirit of "the sky is full of clouds and mulberry trees at night" is like the phoenix in spring, constantly bringing good hope to the world. Mr. Zhong’s health and longevity can truly be said to be “a national treasure and a blessing to the people”!
Mr. Zhong’s grandson Zhong Zhizhou wrote in an article in memory of his grandfather: Someone once said to me: "Your grandfather is like a Buzhong Yiqi soup. ”I replied: "No, tonifying the body and replenishing qi is still too complicated, and the power is still too strong. Grandpa is more like a magic weapon, concise and peaceful, which is of great benefit to people unconsciously!”
