A circle of edema after circumcision is usually related to factors such as surgical trauma, lymphatic drainage obstruction, local infection, etc., and is a common postoperative phenomenon. Post-circumcision edema may be caused by surgical trauma reaction, tight postoperative bandaging, local infection, allergic reaction, premature activity, etc. It can be relieved by pressure bandaging, anti-infective treatment, elevating the penis, avoiding strenuous exercise, and regular dressing changes.
Surgical trauma reaction is the most common cause of postoperative edema. Intraoperative cutting and suturing can cause local tissue damage, trigger inflammatory reactions and increase vascular permeability, leading to tissue fluid leakage to form edema. This condition usually manifests as uniform swelling around the incision, which may be accompanied by mild pain. It is most obvious within 1-3 days after surgery and will gradually subside as the wound is repaired. Keeping the wound clean and dry can help reduce swelling.
Blockage of lymphatic flow is often caused by improper bandaging after surgery. Bandaging that is too tight will compress lymphatic vessels and affect the return of tissue fluid. It manifests as ring-shaped uniform edema and the skin is tight and shiny. Properly adjust the tightness of the bandage, apply ice intermittently within 24-48 hours after surgery, and elevate the penis above the level of the heart to help promote lymphatic return. Avoid standing or walking for long periods of time to reduce the impact of gravity on reflux.
Local infection may cause edema to persist or worsen, which is common 3-5 days after surgery and manifests as obvious redness, swelling, heat and pain, and possibly purulent secretions. Timely medical treatment is required for wound treatment. The doctor may prescribe antibiotics such as cefixime dispersible tablets and levofloxacin tablets. Keep the wound clean, disinfect with iodophor as directed by your doctor, and avoid scratching or squeezing the wound.
Allergic reactions are relatively rare and may be allergic to suture materials, dressings or disinfectants, manifesting as edema with significant itching and rash. It is necessary to seek medical attention promptly to confirm the allergen, and remove sutures or replace dressings if necessary. Your doctor may recommend oral antihistamines such as loratadine tablets. After surgery, you should inform your doctor of your allergy history and choose hypoallergenic surgical materials.
Premature and strenuous activities will aggravate local congestion and edema, especially frequent walking, running, jumping, or sexual intercourse within 1 week after surgery. You should rest in bed for 2-3 days, and avoid riding a bicycle and other activities that put pressure on the penis for 1 month. Wear loose underwear to reduce friction and elevate your scrotum appropriately when sleeping at night. If the edema persists for 2 weeks or worsens, timely reexamination is required to rule out other complications.
After circumcision surgery, attention should be paid to keeping the wound clean and dry. Intermittent ice compresses can be used within 24 hours after surgery to reduce swelling. After 48 hours, warm compresses can be used to promote blood circulation. Eat a light diet, consume more high-quality protein and vitamin C to help heal wounds, and avoid spicy and irritating foods. Avoid sexual intercourse within 1 month after surgery, and conduct regular check-ups to observe the recovery. If signs of infection such as persistent fever, severe pain, purulent discharge, etc. occur, seek medical attention promptly.
