In our country, the practice of cupping is a traditional method of health preservation in traditional Chinese medicine and is still widely used today. So, what are the specific benefits of cupping therapy? Let’s answer that question for you below.
5 Major Benefits of Cupping
1. It is capable of stretching muscles, increasing the pain threshold, and alleviating soreness and fatigue. When muscles are in a state of tension, local blood flow decreases, leading to tissue ischemia. However, the gua sha technique used in cupping can stretch these muscles, increase blood flow, and raise the local pain tolerance, thereby allowing the muscles to relax and replenish the necessary energy.
2. The use of drugs to drain pus and promote wound healing is facilitated by the negative pressure created during cupping. This helps to remove local pus, toxins produced by bacteria, and other substances that hinder wound recovery. At the same time, it can stimulate the growth of granulation tissue and aid in wound contraction, thereby promoting faster healing.
3. It regulates immune function and enhances the body’s resistance. The blood stasis that results from cupping remains in the tissue spaces, which can appropriately activate the body’s immune system and help eliminate inflammatory substances. Thus, cupping represents a form of beneficial self-training for the body.
4. It promotes blood circulation and accelerates metabolism. This is because cupping causes blood vessels to dilate, improving local blood flow. As a result, waste products and toxins are expelled more quickly from the body. At the same time, it also enhances the nutritional status of local tissues, providing more nutrients and oxygen to the cells.
5. Meridian-based stimulation to regulate the functions of internal organs: This approach utilizes the theory that meridians connect various organs. By applying cupping along meridians related to these organs, techniques such as back-and-forth or sliding cupping can be used. These methods have been shown to effectively address respiratory, gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, and gynecological disorders by stimulating corresponding meridian pathways, thereby aiding in the regulation of internal organ functions.
Precautions for cupping therapy
1. Keep warm
Cupping must always be performed after removing one's clothing; therefore, it is important to avoid direct exposure to wind during treatment to prevent catching a chill and to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature.
2. Avoid burns
Do not let any kindling fall into the container, and certainly do not burn it near the opening to avoid burns.
3. Inappropriate areas
Cupping should not be performed on areas with broken skin, scars, growths on the skin, or bony protrusions. Also, the same area should not be waxed every day. Cupping should not be performed again until the scars from previous cupping sessions have fully healed.
4. Prevent infection
After the cupping treatment, if the skin in that area becomes red or itches, do not scratch it. The symptoms will usually subside within a few hours or days. If blisters, droplets, bleeding spots, or bruising appear, these are all normal reactions to the treatment. For minor blisters, it is sufficient to prevent them from breaking and allow them to absorb naturally. For larger blisters, a sterile needle can be used to puncture the base and drain the fluid, followed by applying sterile gauze to prevent infection.
5. Cupping duration
For conditions that are severe, have deep affected areas, or involve painful symptoms, longer cupping sessions are appropriate; for milder conditions with superficial affected areas or paralytic symptoms, shorter cupping sessions are recommended. On areas with thicker muscles, the duration can be slightly longer; on areas with thinner muscles, the duration of cupping should be shorter. During colder climates, the duration of cupping should be appropriately extended, while in hotter climates it should be shortened accordingly.
