Flounder is mainly produced in the northern part of the Yellow Sea and the Bohai Sea, such as Zhuanghe in Liaoning, Qinhuangdao in Hebei, and Penglai and Shidao in Shandong. Qinhuangdao is the best. April to June is the peak season for flounder production. Its body is long and flat on both sides. It is generally about 20 cm long and weighs about 200 grams. Its eyes are large and protruding. Both eyes are on the right side of the head. The upper eye is high and located on the midline of the dorsal edge of the head. The oral clefts on both sides are slightly unequal in length, and there are pointed teeth on both foreheads. The edge of the front gill cover is free and the lateral line is complete. There is no bend above the pectoral fins. The side with eyes is covered by weak ct scales. The body is yellowish brown or dark brown and has no markings. The eyeless side is white and covered with round scales. The scales on the head and between the eyes are small and dense. The dorsal fin extends from the eye to the front end of the caudal peduncle. The pectoral fins are a pair of smaller ones. The pelvic fins start from the back of the pectoral fins to the front end of the tail. The caudal fin is double truncated and has a long caudal peduncle.
