Three years ago when I first became an emergency training instructor, I might have given you several categories. But now that I have understood the actual needs of different groups of people, I know that the core content of first aid and emergency health training is practical skills covering the entire chain of "risk prediction, on-site treatment, and aftermath connection."
Last time I held a special training for the elderly community. At the beginning, I asked if anyone had encountered a neighbor who suddenly fainted at home and didn't know what to do. I raised half of the room's hands, and many aunts said they didn't dare to touch them before, for fear of causing problems. Don’t think this content is useless. Last month, a courier in our area had a heart attack downstairs. The owner of the convenience store next to him just finished our class last week. First, I saw him clutching his chest and sweating, unable to stand. I helped him sit down slowly to avoid falling, bumping, and hitting him. At 120, he reported the house number as soon as possible, and specifically mentioned that he was highly suspected of having a myocardial infarction. He took out the nitroglycerin prepared in the store and gave it to him. When the ambulance arrived, the doctor said directly that with these few steps, the patient had at least ten more minutes of golden treatment time.
Of course, there are different opinions on the depth of training content in our industry. One group thinks that training for ordinary people does not need to be too detailed, such as complex fracture fixation, Heimlich strength control for children of different months of age, etc. It is said that ordinary people have not been practiced repeatedly and practiced, but they are prone to causing secondary injuries. It is better to focus on the key points of CPR compressions and correct first aid calls. It is enough to thoroughly practice the most common skills such as the elements of telephone calls and shower regulations for burns and scalds; the other group believes that as long as it is accompanied by enough practical exercises, there is no harm in mastering more skills. Previously, a mother took our advanced course and fed her child jelly at home and got stuck in the airway. She was saved by using the Heimlich maneuver she had learned. If she had not been exposed to relevant content, it might be too late when 120 arrived.
Oh, by the way, most of the current compliance training also adds a content that many people don’t think of, which is psychological adjustment after first aid. Don’t take it seriously. I once met a young man who rescued an old man who had a sudden illness on the road. Later, the old man was sent to the hospital but could not be saved. The young man felt guilty for half a year and could not even sleep well. In fact, these are normal stress reactions after participating in first aid. In the training, how to relieve them in advance can also avoid a lot of subsequent psychological burden.
To put it bluntly, this kind of training is like a band-aid that you carry in your pocket every day. It is usually inconspicuous, but you only know it when you actually use it. Knowing more accurate knowledge will give you more confidence at critical times, whether you are helping yourself or those around you.
